5H25.20 - Jumping Magnets

Code Number:
5H25.20
Demo Title:
Jumping Magnets
Condition:
Excellent
Principle:
Magnets in a Coil
Area of Study:
Electricity & Magnetism
Equipment:
A Coil and a spring and magnets assembly from the 5K10.48 "Current Coupled Pendula" demonstration box, Lambda Power Supply.
Procedure:
  • Connect the coil to the power supply.  Position the coil vertically and center the spring and magnet oscillator so that it fits into the coil without rubbing.  Lower the magnet assembly so that two of the magnets are inside the coil.  Set the power supply at 5 Volts.  When you turn on the power supply the magnets will be drawn into the coil.  Reverse the leads on the power supply and the magnets will now bounce clear out of the coil.
