8A20.90 - Tidal Heating

Code Number:
8A20.90
Demo Title:
Tidal Heating
Condition:
Excellent
Principle:
Tidal Forces
Area of Study:
Astronomy
Equipment:
Ball with Inserted Thermocouple Probe, Long Flat Board, Digital Thermometer.
Procedure:

Connect the thermocouple that is inserted into the ball to a digital thermometer.  Press down on the ball with the board till the ball bulges significantly and then roll the board back and forth over the ball.  The internal temperature of the ball should increase by at least 1 or 2 degrees in a short amount of time.

The temperature increase will be much more pronounced when using the "Pinky" High Bounce balls.

An alternative is to use the Happy/Sad ball sets and a thermal camera.  Either roll the balls under the board or just hit them repeatedly with the hammer and observe the temperature increase with the thermal camera.
