Postcard Liquid Crystals and Infrared Heat Lamp
Postcard Liquid Crystals

Code Number: 4B40.45

Demo Title: Infrared Radiation/Absorption

Condition: Good

Principle: Radiation and Absorption of Heat from Different Surfaces

Area of Study: Thermodynamics

Equipment: Postcard Liquid Crystals with half of the back side painted black and half painted silver, Infrared Heat Lamp or Hot Plate with aluminum top.

Procedure:

Heat the cards up by shining the heat lamp onto the front of the card until all of the color is gone from the card.  This will happen quickly so don't overheat the card.  Let the card cool and watch which side cools fastest.

You can also hold the card over a large heat source and see which side heats up fastest but this variation may be harder to observe as both sides heat up rapidly.
