Demo Title: Frictional Heating
Condition: Good
Principle: Frictional Heating
Area of Study: Thermodynamics
Equipment: 2 X 4, pointed dowels, and 3/8" drill.
Procedure:
Chuck one of the pointed dowels into the drill. Press into the indentation on the 2 X 4 and start the drill. Smoke should start to appear within 5 seconds. If no appreciable smoke appears by then press harder with the drill.
Put a large dull bit into the drill press. Start drilling into the 2 inch thick piece of iron. Drill for a few seconds, back off, and immediately fill the drill hole with water. The water should boil and create appreciable amounts of steam.
