Demo Title: Van de Graaff - Candle

Condition: Good

Principle: Electrostatics

Area of Study: Electricity & Magnetism

Equipment:

Van de Graaff generator with discharge rod, candle and holder, grill lighter, Plexiglas boxes (stands).

Procedure:

Place the candle at approximately the same height as the dome of the Van de Graaff generator.  The candle should be no more than 6" from the generator.  Turn the generator on and the candle should either point towards or away from the dome depending on the charge on the dome.  Try placing the candle between the discharge rod and the dome for enhanced effect.
